Brick Restoration and Period Brickwork in Attenborough and Nottingham
Old walls were built to move and to breathe. Repairs that ignore that do more damage than the thing they were fixing.
Older brickwork was laid in lime mortar, which is softer than the brick around it on purpose. It takes the movement and lets moisture out through the joint instead of through the face of the brick. Put a hard modern cement mix into that wall and the moisture has to leave somewhere else, which is why you see repointed Victorian houses with the faces spalling off the bricks.
On period work we match the mortar to what is there, in mix as well as colour, and we replace damaged bricks with reclaimed ones that sit with their neighbours rather than shouting.
Where a job needs someone else's expertise we say so and bring them in.
What you end up with. A repair that will still look right in ten years, on a wall that has not been damaged by the fixing of it.
